Sarah Meets The Duke

On Friday, 4th July, Sarah Garrett, member of Sale Moor Ranger Unit and Guider with 7th Sale Moor Brownies, was invited to Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh, to be presented with her Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Certificate.

The presentation took place in the grounds of the Palace, a beautiful setting of lawns and impressive cottage garden planted borders (including a snoozing fox).  Immaculate white marquees had been erected in case of rain and a Marine Band was playing to entertain us.

There were about 300 young people being presented and 700 parents and “friends” – leaders of organisations and Award Officials.  Not many were in uniform and I was very proud that the Duke addressed Sarah and commented on her Brownie coloured badge tab (he was obviously well informed about the Guide Association as no-one prompted him).

The day was a great event and being surrounded by many men in kilts and having the backdrop of Edinburgh just added to the atmosphere.

Congratulations Sarah – the girl done well!
