Torch Relay comes to MediaCity Plaza!

Girls from Salford get ready for London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games

Girls from Salford are getting ready for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games by attending the Olympic Torch Relay at Salford Quays.

At the event, over 200 girls and young women took part in a giant sleepover at the Imperial War Museum and woke at 5:00am to get into position in time to catch a glimpse of the torch as it begins its journey through South Manchester.

Ashna Rayarel for 3rd Walkden Guides said "I really enjoyed being a part of the Torch Relay, it was extra special because it was my first time sleeping away from home with Guides, a real adventure with my friends."

Rosemary Boardman, Commissioner for Girlguiding Swinton, said: “The Guides in the Salford area are extremely excited to be taking part in the Torch Relay Event at Media City and the sleepover. Both leaders and girls are very grateful to be given this once in a lifetime chance to be involved in such an event which will enhance their guiding memories in the future.”

Girlguiding UK has invited young members and volunteers to get involved in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games celebrations to encourage them to be active, to learn about the cultures of different countries around the world and to explore the values that underpin the Olympic and Paralympic movements.

Girls from 1st Ellenbrook Rainbows and Brownies prominently displayed their 106 metre Olympic inspired collage as the torch left MediaCity Salford. It took 144 hours to create the collage and incorporates hundreds of articles collected over the recent months in relation to London 2012. Every girl and leader that took part in the making of the collage has received a Blue Peter badge.

Chris Mazeika-Rimmer, leader of 1st Ellenbrook Brownies said “The making of the collage has been a fantastic event with support from families, friends and the wider community. We would like to thank everyone for their help over the last few weeks.”
