Guide Dogs Visit 6th Altrincham Brownies

When 6th Altrincham Brownies met for the first time after this summer’s Olympic and Paralympic games, it was obvious that the girls had been inspired by what they had seen, especially some of the fantastic Paralympian athletes and the way they overcame their disabilities. We played “sitting volleyball” and the Brownies realised just how hard it was!! Jenny Barton describes how these activities encouraged an appreciation of disabilities and the connection with animals:

It was the Brownies’ choice to do the Animal Lovers badge and so as part of this, we planned a visit from the secretary of the local Guide Dogs for the Blind association Mr Chris Howes. He brought a five month old guide dog puppy Elsa, that he and his wife Eileen are training. Also a local lady Mary Leigh, who has a fully trained guide dog Caryn, came along to talk to the girls. It was a great evening and the girls asked really sensible questions and of course got to meet the dogs! We hope now to raise enough money to sponsor a Guide Dog Puppy. It just shows how girls can be involved in planning their own programme!
