Brownies Stepped out of this world for Big Brownie Birthday Star Quest!

1000 brownies and leaders from around the County joined together at Oasis Academy MediaCityUK in June for a cosmic celebration that kept them on their toes – quite literally!

The girls attempted to break a world record of the most people doing the moon walk at the same time, as part of their Big Brownie Birthday Star Quest adventure.

The world record attempt was part of an unusual event during which the girls celebrated The Big Brownie Birthday with a space-themed spectacular.

The celebration saw the young stargazers travel through three time zones in the hunt for missing stars - taking part in challenges and enjoying new and exciting adventures en route.

The Star Quest story began with a trip to the past to learn more about the 100-year history of the Brownies. Here the Brownies visited traditional fairground stalls and watched a Punch and Judy show, as well as trying out other popular Brownie activities from the past.

Next the girls moved on to the present, where Greater Manchester Recycling and Salford Red Devils ran sessions before the Brownies travelled to the future, and experienced a mad science show amongst other activities. Finally, the Brownies completed the afternoon with their exciting lunar world record attempt.

621 Brownies moon walked for a total time of 46 seconds; all evidence has been sent to the Guinness World Records to be officially verified.

Our County Commissioner Judith Glenn, said: 'To see Brownies from all over our local area come together to celebrate The Big Brownie Birthday was fantastic. The day will be even more spectacular if we manage to beat the world record for the most people doing the moon walk at the same time!”

Matilda, Brownie, age 9, said “I enjoyed seeing all the Brownies from different units together and breaking the world record was so much fun. The Brownie day was great because you do things you wouldn't do anywhere else!”

Megan, Brownie, said “The Star Quest event was really good fun, especially the moon walk world record. It was nice to meet Brownies from other groups and get the chance to do new activities.”
