Manchester Marathon

In April, Girlguiding volunteers from across the County gathered together to help as marshals at the Greater Manchester Marathon. As well as using the opportunity to fund raise in support of 3 of our members taking part in this year’s Scouting World Jamboree in Japan, they were able to raise the profile of Girlguiding with members of the public.

Gaynor Portlock took some photos and told us more about the experience:

“We played an important part in 3 areas:

Leg 3 changeover - here leaders were responsible for presenting medals to the competitors who had completed stage 3 of the Marathon, as well as giving out T-shirts and other supplies. Brownies helped and also handed out leaflets to the crowds cheering on the runners.

Refuge – our job here was to give refreshments to runners who had decided to stop at this stage of the Marathon. We worked closely with the Red Cross who were on hand to deal with any injuries.

Road side marshalling of the crowd - This included looking after pedestrians needing to cross, directing leg 3 runners to the Leg 3 changeover point and looking for runners who might need the help of the refuge team.

The Brownies helping with leg 3 changeover had a great time. They enjoyed creating art out of bottles of water; making signs to encourage the runners and handing out medals to the competitors.

A tiring day but great fun and good to be involved with the public. A worthwhile and memorable event."
