Summer Gig 2015

Megan Auld, Senior Section Member

Having been to the 2014 Summer Gig, I was excited to return this year and when I arrived I wasn’t disappointed! Even though I only attended for Saturday day and night, I felt that I did not miss out on anything and I found the whole process of registration quite flexible. My favourite part of the weekend was the concert, as it had all the fun and excitement of a festival within a safe, comfortable environment. I would happily take part in this event, or another like this run by Girlguiding GMW, as there is an activity for you no matter what your interest and you can have fun in a sheltered, caring atmosphere.

Liz Southern, Leader, Urmston Senior Section

The Summer Gig was a great introduction to residential experiences for Urmston Senior Section as the leaders do not have a residential licence and we had the fortune of eight girls joining us for the weekend! In previous years, I have dropped daughters off at the check-in point, but as I have recently completed my LQ and become a Leader, I now had the chance to experience what happens on ‘the other side’!

I ran a cake decorating activity on the Saturday afternoon which I really enjoyed as I was able to chat with many of the participants and leaders who I didn’t know. It was also nice to share some cake decorating tips with other leaders knowing that they would take it back to their own unit meetings.

It was also fantastic to see the girls ‘taking the lead’; they had the freedom to make their own choices on the plenty of activities available and no rigid programme for them to follow.

If you’re a new leader and feel daunted with the prospect of taking your girls away, I would recommend the Summer Gig. You have the safety net of a well-organised event with experienced leaders around you! There are lots of other leaders willing to share their experience and guide you in the right direction. If, like me, your daughter is also in Girlguiding, The Summer Gig is a good chance to attend the same event without being in close proximity to each other, but with the option of a bit of fun if you feel like it!

My favourite moment: Raving with my daughter and the other Rangers to Bon Jovi’s ‘Living on a Prayer’!!!
