1st Boothstown Brownies get Sugar Smart

When the Change4life ‘sugar smart’ challenge came to Salford, Salford City Council, Salford CCG and Salford Leisure were keen to find original, local, creative solutions to raise awareness in the community. 1st Boothstown Brownies were only too happy to work alongside them to help tackle tooth decay and sugar awareness in Salford.

The Brownies, with their leader Caroline Potter, joined a working group to look at fun ways to encourage the Brownies and their families to make positive changes to their lifestyle and diet. The end result is the Sugar Smart badge piloted over two weeks by the Brownies. The activities included recipes, a food quiz, learning about food labelling and the ‘Ten Minute Shake Up’, a game to encourage exercise. Not only did the Brownies try out the activities they helped design the badge.

The pilot culminated in a press event on Tuesday 6th February where 1st Boothstown Brownies were awarded their badges by the Ceremonial Mayor of Salford. Brownie, Grace Clarke, admitted she was ‘excited and proud to be one of the first Brownies in the country to be awarded the Sugar Smart Badge’.

The Brownies were thrilled to be involved in a project that has been so successful that there are plans to roll the Sugar Smart badge out across units, not only in Salford, but across Girlguiding GMW. Leader Caroline Potter said ‘I think that it will end up going much further than the North West. It’s fantastic that our ideas and feedback have been used in this exciting project’.

1st Boothstown Brownies have shown that Girlguiding continues to be at the forefront of campaigns that enable girls to make a real difference to their communities and families. Taking such an active part in the Sugar Smart Challenge has ‘…really made the girls and their families think and make positive changes’ (Caroline Potter 1st Boothstown Brownies).
