Winter Wonderland 2017- A Review

Walkden East district decided to take Rainbows, Brownies and Guides to Winter Wonderland at Event City last December. The district took advantage of a group rate of £18 per person and negotiated free places for leaders ensuring leader: girl ratios were maintained. Payment was due a month in advance, but additional tickets could be purchased nearer the time.

Units took packed lunches and were able to store them, with coats, free of charge.

The event included many fairground rides and stalls and some seasonal shows. A visit to Father Christmas was included but a gift was extra, as were most of the stalls. (It is worth mentioning that no units paid extra for stalls or the gift.) Winter Wonderland didn’t feel very Christmassy, there was no artificial snow and the size of the venue and number attending made it tricky to manage the district group.

A district evaluation of the event concluded that although the girls had a great time it was more suited to Rainbows and Brownies; the Guides had fun but found limited rides for their age range. The leaders also reflected that they wouldn’t run the trip again as a district due to logistics, cost and rides available. The Rainbow leaders however might do it again!

Top Tip: If you’re going to Event City or Barton Square, park away from the site and walk over; make the same arrangement for home time too and avoid the traffic.
