Ashley House Makeover

In June 2017 Sue Fraser (Ashley Activity Centre’s maintenance lead and an expert in grant applications!) applied, on our behalf, to the Albert Gubay Charitable Foundation for a grant to cover the cost of our "wish list" of refurbishment work for the House. The application was successful and all our wishes have been granted!

Our top wish was to completely change the hot water system. After removing the old system, including the tanks stored in the loft, we now have two sealed hot water tanks heated by gas rather than electricity.

Wish two was to improve the bathroom for the young people. All the old fixtures and fittings have been removed and a full length fitted vanity unit installed. This has inset sinks, underneath cupboards for storage and shelving for wash bags. New mirrors and funky soap dispensers have also been fitted. The old quarry tiles have been covered with new flooring and the colour scheme for the whole room is a cheerful yellow and orange which has been accentuated by new LED lights.

Wish three - the adults’ bathroom has also been refitted!

Wish four was to have new flooring in the main room and we were able to add to this new flooring in the bedrooms and corridors, having been granted sufficient funds to do it all!  The main hall has also benefited from a new suspended ceiling with LED lights installed which makes it so much brighter.

We have been able to complete the transformation by making new curtains from owl fabric for all the bedrooms. Each of the youngsters’ bedrooms has also had fitted a new set of wooden storage cubes and bright storage boxes.
The adult bedrooms have new chests of drawers and the 1st aid room a new storage cupboard. All the bedrooms, corridors, main hall and kitchen have been painted to ensure that everywhere looks bright and fresh.

Work started mid-December 2017 and was completed by the middle of March 2018. The project was organised to ensure the new water system was installed first.  When it came to the bedrooms the bunks and mattresses were stored in the main hall as flooring was laid and walls and ceilings painted. At times it was like a giant jigsaw puzzle which was completed on schedule thanks to a lot of patience on the part of the volunteers and accommodating work men.

We are very grateful to the Albert Gubay Foundation for their generosity which has enabled us to complete our wish list in one go, transforming Ashley’s House into a warmer, more welcoming and bright environment. We look forward to showing it off to all our visitors and very much hope they will like what they see!
