Ashton Rangers are 'Top of the pups'

The Ashton Rangers from Sale have been recognised by PDSA for their fundraising efforts.  The Rangers won vet charity PDSA’s ‘PetAid challenge’ competition, and received their trophy at a behind-the-scenes tour of Manchester PDSA PetAid hospital on 20 July 2010. Attending the presentation were the Rainbows, Brownies and Guides who took part in the fashion show.

The Rangers took on three challenges in 2009, including organising their own fashion show, when they collected items from their family and friends and got members of the Rainbows, Brownies and Guides to model the clothes, raising over £125. The Rangers also held a fundraising stall at Girlguiding Greater Manchester West’s Fun Dog Show at Worthington Park, which raised a further £60 and they collected a further 20 sacks of donations for PDSA’s store in Sale.

The Sale district is no stranger to PDSA’s PetAid Challenge programme as the 1st Ashton South Brownies had previously won the award in 2006 after completing two special challenges; donating 20 bags of goods to the local PDSA charity shops in a sack run event and organising a summer fair.

Gaynor Portlock the Ranger leader said: “I’m really proud of what the girls have achieved. They all worked really hard and had great fun at the same time as helping pets in need of vets.”

Vicki Craighill, PDSA’s Youth & Education manager, said: “The Ashton Rangers’ efforts have made a real difference to pets in the local area. Not only have they raised vital funds for pets in need of vets, but they’ve also made a massive effort to collect donations for Sale PDSA store. PDSA is lucky to have the support of young animal-lovers like the Ashton Rangers.”

PDSA PetAid Challenge is a way for young people to use their skills and hobbies to have fun, get active and raise money for PDSA. Participants over the age of 14 can also count the time they spend on a challenge towards the Service Section of the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
