Urmston Rangers’ London Trip 2019
12 Urmston Rangers and 2 leaders recently spent a weekend in London staying at the Girlguiding Headquarters ICANDO Activity Centre – next door to Buckingham Palace. We travelled down by train on the Friday night and arrived ready for food and sleep! Saturday morning was spent visiting The London Eye where we renewed our Guiding Promise when our capsule reached the highest point. We visited the 4D experience there too which was fun. We had a cruise up the Thames with a really funny tour guide, together with an open air picnic in the unexpected sun! We visited Parliament Square, saw lots of protestors for various campaigns and then made our way up to Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus. Everyone got a bit of free time to wander about to do their own shopping or sightseeing as well.
As a result of the Rangers’ fundraising prior to the trip we were able to spend the evening in Pizza Express….!
Sunday morning was spent visiting The Shard and the viewing gallery, drinking hot chocolate then visiting Covent Garden.
Although this was a touristy trip, the Rangers were able to learn how to navigate their way around a big city using maps and working out the London Underground system. It was a great experience for them to gain some independence, for everyone to get to spend some time together outside our meetings and to get to know each other better.
To quote one of the girls:
“Experiencing the chaos of the London Underground was an excellent life lesson! I thoroughly enjoyed all the activities we did – The London Eye was the best bit..!”
