Let’s Dig! - Waddow Weekend 2019

From 17-19 May 2019 members of Greater Manchester West took over Waddow Hall for a weekend digging deeper into the new programme.

The weekend was packed with exciting and challenging activities to encourage volunteers to explore their knowledge of the new programme and try out activities they could take back to their units.  The programme for the weekend covered section specific sessions as well as cross sectional sessions, all aimed at encouraging leaders to deliver good quality weekly meetings. There was also the opportunity to “air and share” concerns where members could offer each other support and solutions.

The Friday evening involved a “Time Team” challenge; the teams had to complete their challenge within sixty minutes. Each challenge earned their team money and the winning team was the one who finished with the most! The challenges included making a one person tent, singing a campfire song and potting a plant. Lucy Roylance (Guide leader) said “… an awesome way to kick off training! I met new people and got ideas on activities to do with my Guides whilst getting stuck in myself!”

Saturday saw the members checking out an archaeological themed activity suitable for a unit meeting or a residential event. The activity included mummifying your teddy bear, deciphering hieroglyphics and an archaeological “dig” for broken pottery that was then pieced back together. Some members took advantage of the chance to try fencing or glass sledging, others took a tour of Waddow Hall to discover its history, and there was, of course, time for the obligatory visit to the shop!

On Saturday evening the traditional “County Commissioner’s Surprise” got everyone up and moving in a session of Line Dancing with participants demonstrating their skills in the hokey cokey, the conga, the slosh and “5,6,7,8”. Chris Rimmer (Swinton Division Commissioner) said “I had a great weekend with a fantastic bunch of people; I haven’t laughed as much in ages… the training allowed me to build my knowledge…Would I go again? Without hesitation.”

The final word on the weekend goes to Debbie Craven (Brownie leader) who said about her first time at Waddow “… I didn’t know what to expect! I had an amazing time, learning and having fun at the same time. I would definitely recommend a county training weekend!”

Our thanks go to all those involved in organising this weekend, including our section trainers Vicky Smith (Rainbows), Lynne Chapman (Brownies) and Diane Padley (Guides).
